Concert to benefit Nathan Adelson Hospice

The sixth annual Serenades of Life concert will be held 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Judy Bayley Theatre at UNLV.

A wine reception will be held at 7 p.m. and a coffee and dessert reception at 9:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Nathan Adelson Hospice, Southern Nevada's only not-for-profit hospice.

Paula Francis and Gary Waddell of KLAS Channel 8 news will serve as emcees.

Ticket prices are $35 each and are available through the UNLV box office at 895-2787. For more information, call 796-3133.

Community event planned for Saturday

Clark County will host the first Hispanic Heritage community event 1-5 p.m. Saturday at Von Tobel Center, 3610 E. Carey Ave. The event is free.

Entertainment will include Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Martha Luezanos, Mariachi Guadalajara, a children's dance group from Cambridge Community Center and a disc jockey featuring Latin music during the breaks. Call 455-7699.

Church schedules event for public

A community-wide health fair will be held 10 a.m. Sunday at Central Christian Church, 1001 New Beginnings Drive in Henderson.

The health fair is free and will offer a variety of free and low-cost medical services and health-related literature, including childhood immunizations and cholesterol and blood glucose screenings. Call 735-4004, Ext. 274.

Ask the pediatrician

University Medical Center is offering free "Ask the Pediatrician" classes in Spanish and English 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at UMC's Family to Family Connection Center, 1807 W. Charleston Blvd. Call 383-7058.

UNR honors longtime educator

Longtime educator Stella Mason Parson was one of four Nevadans honored Saturday at the University of Nevada, Reno's, annual President's Medal Awards ceremony.

Honorees were recognized for their contributions to the university's growth.

In 1948 Stella Mason Parson was the first black woman to attend the university, and in 1952 she was the first black woman to earn a UNR degree. She went on to teach for 33 years in Las Vegas elementary schools and was honored nationally as Outstanding Elementary School Teacher.

Parson Elementary School was named after her and her late husband, Claude Parson, an administrator in the Clark County School District.

Other honorees include T.J. Day, a senior partner of the Reno-based commercial real estate firm, Hale Day Gallagher Co.; Thomas Hall, former alumni association president, and Myrna Matranga, a retired education professor.

Von Tobel class takes state title

A group of seventh grade students from Von Tobel Middle School placed first in the state for its championship stock market trading during a 10-week competition.

The Stock Market Game is a national program that exposes students to the stock market while teaching real-life applications of economics and personal and consumer finance.

Teams began in February with $100,000 equity. By the end of the game, the Von Tobel team had purchased and traded stocks that increased their equity to more than $172,000.
