UPS would own LV call center under proposal

MicroAge Inc. has withdrawn plans to sell its MicroAge Teleservices LLC unit in an auction and instead plans to sell those assets to United Parcel Service.

Tempe, Ariz.-based MicroAge is operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and had planned to auction the technical support operation.

MicroAge Teleservices, which handles technical support for UPS, AT&T and other large corporations, operates a 24-hour call center in Las Vegas with 450 agents. About 80 percent of those agents are dedicated to UPS.

Under terms of the new agreement, which will be considered by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Phoenix Nov. 21, MicroAge would sell the Teleservices unit, which includes three call centers, to UPS for $11.5 million.

A spokeswoman for UPS said the corporate structure of the Teleservices unit has not been finalized and it hasn't been determined whether the call center would operate as a subsidiary of UPS, or whether it would retain the MicroAge name.

Joan Schnorbus of UPS said the call center would remain open and no changes in operation are expected.
