Annual celebration set for Davis Plaza

The Las Vegas Basque Club will be holding its annual Basque Festival noon-5 p.m. Sunday at the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza in Lorenzi Park, 3333 W. Washington Ave.

Entertainment will include dancers, a brass band and weightlifting and wood chopping exhibitions. Authentic Basque food will be served and a bar will provide refreshments and drinks.

Admission is $2. Children 12 and under are free. For more information, call Jesus Goicoecfhea at 270-9199.

Church group backs organ donor program

The Women's Group of Green Valley Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a program, "The Gift of Life," at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at 1798 Wigwam Parkway.

The program is designed to create public awareness about the Nevada Organ Donor Program. Child care and light refreshments will be provided.

Conference planned Saturday at UNLV

A conference, "Quality Health Care for All Nevadans: Alternative and Solutions," will be held 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday in the Dungan Humanities Building, Room 101 at UNLV.

The conference and the parking are free. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. For more information, call 796-4111.

Dr. Hugh Armstrong, a Canadian professor and author, will speak on "Myths Surrounding the Canadian Health Care System and What Americans Can Learn from the System." In addition, a panel will discuss Nevada health care services by Medicare, Medicaid, Clark County, health insurance companies and the Nevada ombudsman for health care.

RTC will host events at area malls

The Regional Transportation Commission is hosting its annual Transportation Fairs 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Meadows mall, Sears Court; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday at the Boulevard mall, Center Court; and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday at the Galleria mall, JCPenney Court.

Program set Monday at UNLV campus

Five women who have made significant contributions to the Las Vegas community will be honored at the opening reception of the UNLV-based Women's Research Institute of Nevada 3-5 p.m. Monday in the Foundation Building on the UNLV campus.

Those being honored for their outstanding achievements are: Florence McClure, founder of Community Action Against Rape; Kitty Rodman, business pioneer and philanthropist; Emilie Wanderer, the first woman to practice law in Las Vegas and a donor to the institute's oral history project; Thalia Dondero, a member of the state Board of Regents; and Claudine Williams, philanthropist and business pioneer.
