Last week: Rose, the Wolves' starting quarterback, passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Basic to a 21-14 win over Foothill and sole possession of first place in the Southeast Division. The 5-10, 155-pound senior completed 12 of 16 passes for 199 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown strike to Brandon Hawkins.

"He's been a really good leader for us, an on-field coach at times," Basic coach Cliff Frazier said. "And he's been a tough kid, like a quarterback with a lineman's mentality."

Female Athlete of the Week: KATY BARRETT

School: Palo Verde

Class: Freshman

Sport: Golf

Last week: Barrett, daughter of former major league baseball second baseman Marty Barrett, earned medalist honors in victories over Cimarron-Memorial and Centennial to help the Panthers finish the season unbeaten in Northwest Division play. The ninth grader shot a one-over 31 against the Spartans on Tuesday at Eagle Crest, then followed that up two days later with an even-par 30 versus the Bulldogs, also at Eagle Crest.

"She's been working really hard for us, and she's done very well," Palo Verde coach Peggy Lair said. "I expected her to be an asset to the team this year, but she's really come on strong lately."
