UNLV notebook: Cross country will host meet on Saturday

The UNLV cross country team makes its lone home appearance of the season Saturday when the Rebels host the eighth annual UNLV Cross Country Invitational at Sunset Park.

The meet will feature both a men's and women's race. The women will begin with a 5-kilometer race at 8 a.m., and the men are scheduled to follow with an 8-kilometer run at approximately 8:30.

The field includes Cal State Dominguez Hills, Long Beach State, San Diego State, Southern Utah, Utah and Utah Valley State College.

The Rebels, who have never won their own meet, finished second in each of the last two seasons and were just edged by Southern Utah last year, 24-47.

Leading the Rebels will be the senior tandem of Jenni Lopez and Katie Barto, who have finished first and second for UNLV in five of the team's last six meets, dating back to last season.

The UNLV Invitational marks the final regular-season meet of the year for the Rebels. Following the race, the squad has two weeks to prepare for the Mountain West Conference Championships in Fort Collins, Colo., on Oct. 28.

The Rebels (6-5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) will play Air Force Friday afternoon and Alabama A&M on Sunday.

Last week, the Rebels split a pair of conference games against UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge. Senior keeper Robert Ackah recorded his third shutout of the season against CSN on Sunday.

UNLV (9-4, 2-0) will play at Utah this afternoon and at BYU on Saturday.

Junior Janae Sims continues to lead the Rebels with seven goals.

UNLV (1-13, 1-4) will conclude the two-match trip with a Saturday evening contest at Wyoming.
