Becker, Backus to square off again

Incumbent state Supreme Court Justice Nancy Becker will be facing Gary Backus of Ely in November's general election.

According to unofficial election results, Becker, who was elected to the Supreme Court two years ago, received 67,370 votes, or 65.31 percent of the 103,161 votes cast in her race. Backus drew 16,108 votes, or 15.61 percent.

Day Williams, a Carson City attorney, received 8,534, or 10.81 percent.

Becker said she was pleased with the results but has no intention of resting on her laurels. She wants everyone to know who she is and what her record is, she said.

"I'm a common-sense individual who loves Nevada and is dedicated to keeping the judiciary fair and impartial and making it accessible to the citizens of Nevada," Becker said.

Backus, 58, and Williams, 46, had both campaigned on their beliefs that the Supreme Court needs to work harder and produce more opinions.

But Becker argued that the Supreme Court has already reduced its backlog of pending cases from 2,400 to 1,800.

Backus, an Ely attorney, received his law degree from the University of Idaho School of Law. He practiced law in Reno for 14 years and served as the Eureka County district attorney before moving to Ely in 1993.

Becker, 45, spent 12 years as a Municipal Court and District Court judge prior to her election to the Supreme Court.
