Woman killed in highway crash

A Boulder City resident was killed Sunday afternoon when she lost control of her car as she drove on a highway shoulder to get around slow traffic.

The accident occurred about 3:45 p.m. on U.S. 93 north of Boulder City near Lake Mead, Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Cabrales said.

The woman was headed toward Hoover Dam when she came upon bumper-to-bumper traffic caused by an accident near the dam.

'The driver was driving at a high rate of speed along the shoulder of the highway, when a Boulder City Police officer spotted her and began to follow," Cabrales said.

Instead of stopping, the driver continued to speed down the side of the road, but soon ran out of shoulder and crashed into the side of a tractor-trailer parked on the highway.

The Boulder City woman, who has not yet been identified, then lost control of her car, and ended up crashing through a road sign before careening across the desert and coming to a stop in a ditch.

The woman was thrown from the car and died from her injuries at the scene, Cabrales said.

The accident remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
