Northwest to be called Centennial Hills

If you live in the city of Las Vegas north of Cheyenne Avenue, you suddenly have a new place to call home.

Centennial Hills was unanimously adopted Wednesday as the new name of the northwest portion of the city after a community-based effort to select a title akin to Green Valley or Summerlin.

"This name will only be adopted if it's adopted by the residents," City Councilman Michael Mack said just prior to the vote.

The name does nothing official but could instill a greater sense of pride in the area, Mack added.

And since the city's northwest Town Center is often mistaken with the Howard Hughes-developed Town Center in Summerlin, the Centennial Hills name could reduce the confusion.

"We're giving Town Center back to Howard Hughes," Mack said.

Centennial Hills was selected out of 520 names submitted by residents to the city. Members of the northwest Citizen Advisory Team narrowed the list to 10 finalists, and a blue ribbon committee then pared it to two -- Centennial Hills and Arrow Canyon.

A valleywide e-mail and fax vote then resulted in Centennial Hills as the winner with 2,222 votes. Arrow Canyon received 1,784 and write-ins Tule Springs and Mayor Oscar Goodman's choice, Cielo de Oro, got 111 and 35 votes respectively.
