Feb. 24: Bubble boy winked goodbye before before his death
Story: David, America's 12-year-old "bubble" boy, joked in his final hours and winked a goodbye before dying. He apparently died of complications from an experimental bone marrow transplant doctors hoped would cure him.
July 12: Mondale picks Ferraro VP
Story: Walter Mondale Wednesday reportedly decided to pick Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate, which would make her the first woman vice presidential candidate if nominated next week by the Democratic National Convention.
July 19: Gunman killed after murdering 20 in restaurant
Story: A berserk gunman, screaming "I've killed a thousand, I'll kill a thousand more," slaughtered 20 men, women and children at a McDonald's restaurant in San Diego before a police marksman killed him.
Oct. 31: Indira Gandhi shot 8 times
Story: India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot and critically wounded in the chest and abdomen at her residence, police said.
