Rebels’ Cheetany signs contract with Titans

UNLV punter Ray Cheetany has signed a one-year free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans.

Cheetany, rated the No. 6 punting prospect in the nation by Joel Buchsbaum of Pro Football Weekly and a 2000 preseason first team All-American by Street & Smith's magazine, wasn't chosen in last month's NFL Draft.

Ironically, Tennessee defensive line coach Jim Washburn, who recommended Cheetany to Titan head coach Jeff Fisher, recruited Cheetany out of Iowa Central Community College while he was an assistant at Arkansas. But when then-Razorbacks head coach Danny Ford was fired later that season, Cheetany turned his attention to UNLV.

Cheetany averaged 41.3 yards per punt as a senior following a spectacular junior campaign which saw him average 45.4 yards per punt, including a remarkable 25 punts of 50 or more yards and six of 60 or more yards.
