$70 million hospital project planned for southwest valley

The Valley Health System plans to build a $70-million, 176-bed hospital in southwest Las Vegas.

The new Spring Valley Hospital would be located at the corner of Rainbow Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue, near the Spanish Trail Country Club. In addition to the four-story, 280,000-square-foot hospital, there would be a three-story medical office building.

The 35.5 acre parcel is already zoned for a medical facility. Construction would begin following approval by the state health division and county building department.

Today's announcement comes two weeks after St. Rose Dominican Hospital released plans for a 200-bed facility on Warm Springs Road between Buffalo and Durango Drives. The Valley Health System and St. Rose Dominican Hospital sites are separated by less than five miles.

Rod Davis, president of St. Rose, said this morning his organization had targeted Spring Valley because there is currently no hospital in the immediate area.

"I applaud (Valley Health System's) efforts to increase the number of hospital beds in the valley," Davis said.

Clark County Commissioner Dario Herrera, whose district includes Spring Valley, said he hoped the two new hospitals would result in more choices and lower costs for health care. At the same time Herrera said he was concerned about whether enough doctors, nurses and other health professionals could be hired to staff the facilities.

"We're facing a shortage of medical personnel across the board, whether it's at UMC or private hospitals," Herrera said Wednesday. "It's an issue public officials at the local, state and federal levels need to be concerned about."

Valley Health System operates Summerlin, Desert Springs and Valley hospitals and is owned by Universal Health Services. With headquarters in King of Prussia, Pa., Universal Health Services operates 98 facilities in the United States, Puerto Rico and France. The company did $2.7 billion in sales last year.

Four other hospitals are in the works for the Las Vegas Valley, the fastest growing metropolitian area in the United States.

A 120-bed hospital on Losee Road in North Las Vegas, operated by Park PLace Medical LLC, is expected to open in 2003. Universal Health Services is also planning to open a hospital North Las Vegas and received approval from the city's Planning Commission in June for a 180-bed facility. The most ambitious proposal may be from Radix LLC, a private development company, which says it will build a $700 million, 800-bed hospital complex on a site yet to be chosen in the Las Vegas Valley.

The new Spring Valley Hospital includes a neonatal intensive care unit, 26-bed women's center and outpatient services.
