Las Vegas area fishing report: Falling temperatures aid anglers

NEVADA DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

Shore anglers at Lake Mead have some cause for optimism as dropping water temperatures appear to be bringing striped bass closer to shore, where they are feeding on threadfin shad.

Anglers told the Nevada Division of Wildlife that stripers have been boiling this week early in the mornings at Hemenway Harbor and Horsepower Cove. Boils occur when stripers feed on shad on the lake's surface.

One angler caught four stripers, including one that was approximately seven pounds, on Monday morning at Hemenway Point. He caught the fish with a chrome and blue Pencil Popper lure.

Boaters continue to have success in the Boulder Basin with the better action taking place between Pyramid Island and the Hemenway Wall. Stripers have been breaking the surface intermittently through the morning hours.

There continue to be reports of stripers being caught in the Virgin Bowl in the Overton Arm at night. Crappie are normally caught by fishing in brush with crappie jigs and live minnows.

NDOW is scheduled to conduct the first rainbow trout plants of the season on Friday at Horsepower Cove, Hemenway Harbor, South Saddle Cove and B-5 (Pumphouse) Cove.

Rainbow trout will be stocked Friday at Willow Beach. NDOW stocked trout at Powerline Cove on Wednesday and is scheduled to stock at Placer Cove today.

Pete Gill, park manager, said anglers can check on current ice conditions by calling the park at (775) 962-5102.
