Letter: FBI is getting the job done in Northern Nevada

I was surprised to read recent statements by Mayor Jeff Griffin of Reno. Mayor Griffin has repeatedly criticized the FBI for failing to promptly notify him and local authorities of a suspicious letter found at a Reno business. The letter was later found to be benign.

On Oct. 10 the FBI was notified of the suspicious letter. Agents responded and assessed the situation. The letter contained no anthrax threat, no foreign substances, and did not merit laboratory testing. Only out of an abundance of caution was the letter tested and later found to be negative for the presence of anthrax.

The FBI enjoys an excellent relationship with the Reno Police Department. These thoughts are echoed by Reno Police Chief Jerry Hoover. Chief Hoover and I agree the matter was handled appropriately.

We will continue to work together to ensure the safety of residents of Northern Nevada.

Earning and maintaining the public trust is the most important aspect of a public servant's career. This is accomplished through absolute honesty, competence, support of internal and external review, and acceptance of responsibility. At a time when America stands together, the public interest is not served by divisive and inaccurate characterization of the relationship between local, state and federal law enforcement.
