Letter: Keep nuke waste where it's made

I may be naive, but could someone please explain why nuclear waste cannot be kept at the nuclear plant where it was created?

The plants already have city and state approval to exist where they are -- if they would bury their own waste it wouldn't have to travel across the country through many states with a potential for disaster along the route.

Basically, keep it where it is! Maybe there is a logical reason why that won't work, or maybe it's just too simple for government to comprehend.
