Letter: Let's cut ties with OPEC and buy Mexican oil
Wednesday, April 24, 2002 | 9:08 a.m.
Wouldn't it be great to soon become independent and be rid of OPEC -- the Middle East oil cartel that has the United States by the throat? It's very possible.
Since the Bush administration has recently granted many more benefits to our friends south of the border it should be no problem at all. Mexico is extremely rich in oil, and their president, Vincente Fox, should be happy to trade with our country and to sell us oil at very decent prices in return for our favors to his people.
My last two purchases -- a 36-inch Zenith TV and a Hoover Steam-Vac Carpet Cleaner were both made in Mexico, beautifully made and at outstandingly fair prices.
By also buying our oil from Mexico this would provide good-paying jobs for its people and allow us in the United States to shut the door and say goodbye to the terrorists, Saudi Arabia and the rest of the trouble-making countries in the Middle East. A win-win situation.
President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, however, are reluctant to risk their personal fortunes, which are mainly dependent on Middle East oil. This is the reason why they are now in the process of treading softly, so as not to offend the oil-rich terrorist countries. This is a direct insult to our real friends in Israel. We can easily repair this problem in the next election. It can't come soon enough!
