Events are planned for all ages

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area has a busy schedule of hikes and other educational programs planned this week for Southern Nevadans of all ages.

Bureau of Land Management rangers and volunteers offer hikes, walks and programs free of charge, but reservations are required. To make reservations or for more information, call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:

Stargazing: A campfire program Saturday, hosted by Ranger Brian.

First Creek: Learn about the desert tortoise in and around a 2 1/2 mile easy to moderate hike Sunday.

Easy Strolling: A short, easy walk in the canyon Sunday, exploring, chatting and learning some of the canyon's secrets.

Butterflies & Moths: An easy two-mile children's program for ages 5 and older that will teach the difference between butterflies and moths and why they are important.

Private showing of jewelry is scheduled

The Sisterhood of Congregation Ner Tamid will hold a private showing of jewelry from Santa Fe, N.M., artist Mitzi Lynn from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday at the temple, 2761 Emerson Ave.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Sisterhood and will enable it to continue offering free programs such as Tot Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh.

Red Rock Canyon to host competition

Red Rock is presenting its photo contest. All color photos must be of Red Rock Canyon scenery. The visitor center at Red Rock will receive photo entries from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 22 and 23 only.

Cash awards and a reception will be given to all the winners. All entries will be displayed at the George Federal Building from June 24-28. Non-winning entries will be picked up at the Red Rock visitor center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 29-30. Winning entries will be announced and displayed on July 4 at the Red Rock Canyon visitor center. For contest requirements, regulations, and time frame for receiving entries, call park ranger Gina Mele at 363-1921.

Mobile unit set for Smith's market

The United Blood Services Mobile Unit will accept blood donations from noon until 6 p.m. Saturday at Smith's Food & Drug, 10606 S. Eastern Ave., Henderson.

The organization recommends that all donors be ages 17 and older, a minimum weight of 110 pounds and in good health on that day. Donors are also asked to bring with them the names of any medication currently being taken. The procedure takes about 40 minutes.

The seventh annual Race for the Cure

will begin with registration at 6 a.m. Saturday at Third Street and Lewis Avenue to support breast health initiatives. For more information, call 822-2324.

The Southern Nevada Coalition

of Concerned Women presents its sixth annual Charity Luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Monte Carlo, featuring Tony Brown of Tony Brown's Journal. Tickets are $50. Call 256-6194.

The Injured Police Officers Fund

will hold its second annual motorcycle fund-raiser starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at Las Vegas Harley Davidson, 2605 S. Eastern Ave., then proceeding along Lake Shore Drive in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and ending in Mesquite at the Oasis Casino. All proceeds raised will benefit the IPOF. Author and expert on the phenomenon

of near-death experience, Dr. Raymond Moody, will discuss accepting the reality of a loss, working through emotional pain, adjusting to a changed environment, and moving forward, at 7 p.m. Friday at the First Church of Religious Science, 1420 E. Labour of Love Productions

presents "Camelot" starring Kara Love, John Curran and James Thalgot at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the Rainbow Library's amphitheater, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive.
