Meadows wins trip to nationals

The Meadows School will compete May 3-6 at the National Science Bowl in Chevy Chase, Md.

The Meadows recently topped 31 other high school teams at the 11th annual Nevada Regional Science Bowl, becoming the first Southern Nevada school to represent the region in four years.

The Meadows squad of Matthew Swetnam, Patrick Hummel, Heather Cringan, Alan Micev and Mark Russell is coached by teacher John Milburn. In the final round, they defeated four-time champion Reno High School Team A.

Green Valley High School finished third.

The Meadows team won $2,500 for its math and science departments, matching team bookbags and the trip to the nationals. There the local squad will answer questions on a variety of science subjects, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics.

LV will build three new stations

The city of Las Vegas has scheduled groundbreaking ceremonies for three new fire stations in the northwest.

Groundbreaking for Fire Station 44 at Washington Avenue west of Buffalo Drive is scheduled March 1; Fire Station 43 on Smoke Rand Road and Torrey Pines Drive, March 29; and Fire Station 45 at North Fort Apache Road and Gilmore Avenue, April 4.

The three new stations are being built with funding from a fire initiative passed by voters in November 2000. Each of the stations will have a fire pumper and paramedic rescue/ambulance.

The new stations are expected to be open and operating in late 2002 or early 2003.

The Las Vegas Wash Green-Up

HELP of Southern Nevada

will host its second annual Mardi Gras fund-raiser 6 p.m. Saturday at The Orleans. The event will feature beads, Cajun food, sequined masks and entertainment. All proceeds benefit HELP of Southern Nevada. For more information, call 369-4357.

Red Rock Canyon

National Conservation Area will host a free campout Friday and Saturday at the 13-mile Campgroud to showcase recent improvements. Call 363-1921.
