Las Vegas area fishing report: Lake Mead striper action mixed

Some anglers are finding fair action for striped bass at Lake Mead while others have had little or no luck.

Walt deMattos, Nevada Division of Wildlife creel census clerk, said stripers have been caught recently at the tires at Las Vegas Bay Marina, Saddle Cove, Sand Island and Saddle Island. Anglers who have been fishing in the Overton Arm have had some luck in the Muddy River.

There have been reliable reports of stripers weighing more than 10 pounds being hooked after the weekly trout plants at Pumphouse Cove. Stripers have also been seen swimming along the shoreline at Hemenway Harbor after the trout plants.

Stripers are generally being caught with anchovies at depths of 80 to 100 feet. They are also being taken with surface lures, usually following the plants.

Largemouth fishing was slow for competitors who were fishing in a tournament on Saturday in the Overton Arm. However, one angler did manage to bring a 14-pound stringer of fish to the scales. They were caught beyond the Virgin River narrows with an artificial worm.

Tilapia continue to be caught in coves in the Overton Arm. Anglers are using green Powerbait to entice the fish.

Very light fishing pressure and poor success for striped bass continue to be the pattern at Cottonwood Cove.
