New wards ready for council’s OK

North Las Vegas City Council members are expected to approve new council wards on March 6.

As a result of the city's growth over the past decade, the existing wards no longer include about the same number of residents. State law requires that ward populations cannot differ by more than 5 percent.

Proposed new ward boundaries show that Councilman Robert Eliason, who represents the easternmost section of town, could lose some undeveloped areas to the north, but gain neighborhoods east of the Interstate 15 in the old part of town. He would represent about 32,719 residents.

Councilman William Robinson, who has the smallest ward and has represented mostly older areas of North Las Vegas, would gain newer neighborhoods in the middle of the city. He would lose part of his former ward near the North Las Vegas Airport. Robinson would represent about 32,033 residents.

Councilwoman Stephanie Smith would pick up some of Robinson's ward to the south, but lose the area between Clayton Street and Revere Street north of Ann Road. She would continue to represent residents in the proposed master-planned community on 1,900 acres at the northern end of town. About 31,388 residents would live in her ward.

Councilwoman Shari Buck would gain large chunks of undeveloped land in the middle of the city as well as most of the Eldorado neighborhood. She would lose a few neighborhoods farther south. Buck would represent about 32,231 residents.
