Online casinos buy more ads

The Internet gambling industry has become the fifth-largest purchaser of Internet advertisements, according to a media research company.

Jupiter Media Metrix reported online casinos accounted for 2.5 billion online ad "impressions" in December, up 170 percent from December 2000. Impressions measure the number of times an ad is delivered for viewing to an Internet user.

The only categories that posted more impressions during the month were books, movie and music retailers; investment services; consumer credit; and travel booking services.

The agency said gambling websites reported 13.6 million unique visitors during December, who spent a total of 274 million minutes logged onto the sites.
