Shopping cart law eyed

Following the lead of Clark County and Las Vegas, North Las Vegas City Council members are likely to adopt a shopping cart ordinance in the near future.

Sheldon Klain, the city's code enforcement manager, presented a draft ordinance on Wednesday that would impose fines on businesses if they don't keep their shopping carts on their property.

The new law would require stores to collect carts that shoppers abandon around the city and would charge them $50 per abandoned cart if city officials cite them more than three times within a six-month period.

Store owners would also be required to post signs on the premises warning customers that the removal of carts is illegal.

Mayor Michael Montandon and Councilwoman Shari Buck said the new law was long overdue.

But Councilwoman Stephanie Smith cautioned that she didn't want to create bad feelings between the city and business owners.

"I want to make sure this is a partnership versus the city putting a move" on store owners, she said.
