Teen dies in shooting

A possible drug deal gone bad left a 17-year-old Las Vegas boy dead, Metro Police said.

Witnesses told police that several suspects ran from the Sunrise Plaza parking lot filled with shoppers at Lake Mead and Hollywood boulevards shortly after a shooting about 9:30 p.m. Monday, Metro Homicide Lt. Tom Monahan said.

Thomas Owens, who was shot in the neck, died from his wounds as he tried to drive a burgundy sedan away, Monahan said.

A woman with the driver was not injured, although her clothing was grazed by a bullet, officers said.

"Anytime you have shots fired in a parking lot at 9:30 at night in a residential area, there is a danger to the public," Monahan said.

Pahrump woman dies in rollover

A 51-year-old Pahrump woman died from her injuries after her vehicle overturned about 8:20 a.m. Monday on the Blue Diamond Highway, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

April Goff was traveling northbound toward Pahrump when the vehicle drifted into the center median. Goff then over-corrected, causing the vehicle to cross the northbound lanes, where it rolled over in the desert, troopers said.

Goff was airlifted to the University Medical Center Trauma Unit, where she died about four hours after the accident, troopers said.

No one else was involved in the collision.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, although it appears Goff may have fallen asleep.

Ex-principal may plead in sex case

HAMMOND, Ind. -- A U.S. District Court judge has allowed federal court staff members to calculate how many years a former Baptist school principal charged with crossing state lines to have sex with an 11-year-old female student would serve in prison if he pleaded guilty.

William A. "Andy" Beith, 30, of Burns Harbor, is thinking about giving up his right to a jury trial and admit to transporting one of his sixth-grade female students across state lines for the purposes of having sex. He was arrested in Las Vegas with the student.

No date is set for when such an analysis will be completed, although it is likely to take place before the trial is scheduled to begin. Lozano recently rescheduled Beith's trial for either the week of July 8 or Aug. 12.

UPN to debut 10 p.m. newscast

KLAS-TV Channel 8, with United Paramount Network as a partner, plans to debut a 10 p.m. news broadcast on Sept. 9 on local UPN stations.

UPN operates KTUD-TV broadcast channels 25 and cable 14 in Las Vegas, KLBC-TV cable Channel 2 in Laughlin and KAME-TV Channel 21 in Reno, according to its website.

The 10 p.m. newscast will have a new anchor, producer, director and crew.

The only other 10 p.m. television news broadcast in the Las Vegas Valley appears on KVVU Channel 5.

The additional news broadcast will not affect current operations at Channel 8, executive producer Stanton Tang said.

Smell of smoke forces landing

ALBUQUERQUE -- An American Airlines flight from Las Vegas was diverted to Albuquerque's international airport Monday afternoon after passengers complained of smelling smoke.

American Airlines spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said there were no visible signs of smoke in the forward cabin but the pilot thought it best to land the plane in Albuquerque.

Flight 408 was en route from Las Vegas to Dallas. The Boeing 757 landed without incident shortly after 5 p.m., airport spokeswoman Maggie Santiago said.

Nellis to switch to new I.D. card

The Military Personnel Customer Service office at Nellis Air Force Base will be closed June 21-28 to install equipment and train customer service representatives on a new Department of Defense common access card.

All active duty, National Guard, reserve, Defense Department civilians and some contractors will be required to have the new card issued by October 2003. Retired military personnel will not be affected by the change and will keep their current identification cards, customer service chief Kathleen Reilly said.

Customer service will not have the ability to enroll new dependants or issue any cards during the closure, Reilly said. The closest facility issuing cards will be Fort Irwin, Calif., about 150 miles south of Las Vegas.
