Letter: Clearing up the democracy issue
Sunday, March 10, 2002 | 9:03 a.m.
Let me see if I can clear up the confusion. A republic is a form of democracy -- to be specific, a representative democracy. A nation or state does not have to be a direct democracy governed through an ongoing series of plebiscites to be termed a democracy.
Oh, yes, and a government whose polices are formulated at the behest of corporate executives and interlocking corporate boards is not a democracy -- that's called an oligarchy.
