Training center to open

Las Vegas-based casino operators Boyd Gaming Corp. and MGM MIRAGE expect to open a new training center in Atlantic City Monday.

The Atlantic City Jobs & Opportunities Training Center will offer unemployed and employed residents classes in basic adult education, GED preparation, English-as-a-second-language classes, social service referrals, citizenship services, casino licensing and other services.

The center is part of an employment program launched in September 2000 as construction began on Borgata, a $1 billion luxury casino resort under construction by the two companies. Both companies have provided nearly $2 million for the center.

The program aims to provide a variety of training opportunities to residents including construction apprenticeship programs, hospitality and marketing training and life skills training.

The 2,010-room Borgata is scheduled to open next summer, the first new Atlantic City resort to open in more than a decade.
