City Council briefs for June 5, 2003

Supper club slots rule delayed

The Las Vegas City Council will consider at its June 18 meeting a proposal to allow a maximum of five slot machines at restaurants classified as supper clubs.

The bill was on Wednesday's council agenda but was not acted on, other than to set it for hearing and comment in two weeks.

The proposed ordinance is a compromise from a bill introduced earlier this year that would have allowed up to 10 slot machines at any supper club with more than 5,000 square feet of usable floor space and five machines at supper clubs with less than 5,000 square feet.

A supper club is a restaurant that has a small bar but derives most of its income from meals, such as Outback Steakhouse.

Committee will get slaughter bill

The City Council sent to a June 16 council recommending committee meeting a bill that if approved will allow the slaughter and processing of live birds in commercial areas throughout the city.

The slaughtering process, according to the proposal, would be allowed in several different zoning areas including C-1, which is usually located near residential neighborhoods and includes most retail areas. The measure opens the door for local grocery stores to sell freshly killed poultry.

If passed, applicants seeking to kill birds at their establishment would have to come before both the Planning Commission and City Council to get a special use permit.

Council approves naming of park

The City Council approved naming the new park at Torrey Pines Drive and Smoke Ranch Road for community activist Suzie Conaway-Cameron, who died in December at 57.

Born in New York, Conaway-Cameron was a longtime Southern Nevada resident and family service director at Palm Mortuary.

She was known in the community for her work addressing women's issues and community health and was a strong advocate for organ donations through the Nevada Donor Network. She also was a longtime Weight Watchers leader and supporter of Nathan Adelson Hospice.

Cameron Community Park is located adjacent to Las Vegas Fire Station 43.

Speed bumps OK'd for Shetland

The City Council approved the spending of $13,500 to install speed bumps on Shetland Road between Charleston Boulevard and Palomino Lane over objections from city staff who said they do not meet the criteria for the traffic-slowing devices.

Outgoing Councilman Michael McDonald said residents' concerns over traffic on the street that leads to Howard Wasden Elementary School prompted his making the proposal that passed by a 5-0 vote.

Mayor Oscar Goodman and Councilwoman Lynette Boggs McDonald were absent. Goodman was attending a funeral and Boggs McDonald is in India through mid-June as a delegate of the American Council of Young Political Leaders, city officials said.

The placement of drug rehabilitation centers

in residential neighborhoods will be addressed at the City Council's June 18 meeting. The bill, which modifies the way Las Vegas defines drug and alcohol treatment facilities in its zoning code, was on Wednesday's council agenda but no action was taken other than to notice it to the next meeting.

The City Council delayed

until June 18 a proposal to name the park on Fourth Street and Stewart Avenue adjacent to City Hall for longtime Las Vegas historian Frank Wright, who died at age 64 on April 25.
