Letter: City drives stake into the homeless

Congratulations to Mayor Oscar Goodman and the compliant Las Vegas City Council for blindsiding Clark County, North Las Vegas, the United Way, and the Southern Nevada advocates for homeless persons in the denial of funds for the Crisis Intervention Center.

This is the final blow to the human political pawns: the homeless. Mayor Goodman and the compliant City Council have led a 20-month campaign to reduce homeless services in Ward 5. This was done while publicly stating that homelessness and the homeless were a priority.

The homeless population, which includes veterans, mentally ill people and families with children, needs more services, not less. These funds are available though the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, but the city of Las Vegas has the responsibility to separately fund services to benefit our fellow citizens in Ward 5.

More honesty and less political posturing is needed to comprehensively help the homeless help themselves.
