Committee meets to begin search for AD

The search to find a replacement for John Robinson as UNLV's ninth athletic director begins in earnest today when a 15-person search committee meets for the first time.

The group will be chaired by history professor Andy Fry and will help screen candidates. UNLV President Dr. Carol C. Harter, however, will make the final decision and has expressed a desire to have a new AD hired by the start of football season.

The committee is comprised of athletic department personnel, students, faculty, alumni and community members. It includes both men's basketball coach Charlie Spoonhour and women's head coach Regina Miller, men's soccer coach Barry Barto, football defensive coordinator Mike Bradeson and senior associate athletic director Jerry Koloskie, who initially planned to seek the position but had a change of heart.

Others on the committee include Len Zane, the chairman of the school's Intercollegiate Athletic Council; Wendy Meyers, UNLV's associate athletic director for finance; history professor and faculty athletic representive Hal Rothman; student body president Monica Moradkhan; graduate student representative Jocelina Santos; alumni president Kevin Page; staff representative Ernest Phillips; faculty chairman John Readence; and community representatives Bobby Siller and Rhonda Mushkin.

UNLV also has hired the Overland Park, Kan., law firm of Bond, Schoeneck and King to assist in the search and narrow the list of perspective candidates. The firm specializes in athletic department searches as well as NCAA compliance matters.

Fry said he expected today's first formal committee meeting to set up guidelines for future meetings in July. The job is being advertised in various NCAA publications with a July 1 application deadline.

"I just got back this weekend (from a vacation to West Virginia) and I didn't check my messages while I was gone," Fry said. "So I really don't know much about what will be discussed at this meeting other than going over what procedures we are going to use and what kind of schedule we can form for future meetings."

Spoonhour and Miller figure to be on the road during much of July recruiting which should make for some interesting logistics.

"I don't think anything substantial is going to happen until after the filing deadline," Fry said. "I think this will be more an organizational meeting more than anything else."
