Columnist Peter Benton: Fair-Manning team wins Spanish Trail event

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

The pairing of Lee Fair and Lloyd Manning put it all together beautifully to win the recent Spanish Trail Country Club's Member/Guest Tournament against the teams of Jack Nethercutt/Pat Walsh plus Jim and Tim Bianco.

Seventy-eight two-man teams were grouped by cumulative handicaps into 13 flights of six two-man teams, with each pairing playing five 9-hole matches over the two days of the tournament. Using a points system, the team winning each hole received one point, and in the event of a tie, one half a point for each pairing. An additional point was awarded to the team which won the most points in each match.

Flight winners, with STCC members listed first were as follows:

Aston Martin -- Rob Martinez and Jim Massey.

Bentley -- Lee Fair and Lloyd Manning.

Rolls Royce -- Mike Ford and Rich Erdmann.

Lamborghini -- Jack Nethercutt and Pat Walsh.

Ferrari -- Jim Bianco and Tim Bianco.

Porsche -- Georges Maalouf and Greg Lee.

Lexus -- Woody Rossum and Robert Baker.

Jaguar -- Jim Bingham and Dale Clark.

BMW -- Ron Guettersloh and Tom Harmon.

Infinity -- Bill Lindsey and Joe McGlaughlin.

Cadillac -- Greg Griffin and John Lawyer.

Audi -- Tom Nichols and Chuck Didonato.

Mercedes -- Russ Roth and Steve Caria.

Flight winners participated in an alternate shot team shootout where three pairings (with the highest scores or via a chip-off) were eliminated on the first three playoff holes, while the remaining four teams went head-to-head with one team being eliminated on the remaining holes until the winning team was determined.

Painted Desert's Erin Borcherts teamed Canyon Gates Kim Braaten to win the best-ball gross segment of play with a 71-67--138. Doe Emes (Spanish Trail) and Brenda Knott (Badlands) placed second at 143, with third spot going to Laurie Johnson (Badlands) and Pauline May (Canyon Gate). Their score was 147.

Net division winners with 64-61--125 were Rita Byorick (Badlands) along with Kay Medrano (Anthem). Sienna's Pam Downey and Julie Skinner (Badlands) followed at 126, while the duo of Margie Bowgren (Badlands) and Lois Harper of Angel Park took third place with 130.

Arnold Palmer is the captain of the U.S. team. He led the United States to victory in the first UBS Cups. The UBS Cup is sanctioned by the European Seniors Tour and the PGA Tour. Each team will consist of six players aged 40-49 and six players 50 and over.

Jacklin, 58, who competes on the Champions Tour has 24 victories worldwide, including two major championships.

He won the 1969 British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes to become the first home-grown champion since Max Faulkner in 1951. Eleven months later he won the U.S. Open at Hazeltine Golf Club to become the first Briton in 50 years to claim that title.
