Pageant applications now being accepted

Applications forms for the 2004 Miss Nevada and Miss Teen Nevada USA pageants are now being accepted.

Applications for the pageants tentatively scheduled for the last week in November at a location to be determined can be obtained by calling 784-0872.

Additional information about the pageants can be found on the Internet at missusa.com, said Steve Bailey, chief executive officer of Starbound USA who recently was selected by the Miss USA/Miss Universe organization as one of three Nevada in-state directors, along with Margo and Bill Russell, longtime Nevada educators.

Basketball helps promote literacy

Children ages 10 through 12 are invited to compete in the A Buzzer Beater for Literacy basketball tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Doolittle Community Center, 1901 N. J St., to provide support for area children and educators in their fight against illiteracy.

During the tournament, children will learn the importance of good reading skills, sportsmanship and physical health.

The Commission on Substance Abuse

Education, Prevention, Enforcement and Treatment presented four Governor's Achievement Awards for outstanding performance and dedication in the field of substance abuse education, prevention, enforcement or treatment. Receiving the awards were: Dr. Miriam Adelson, Trooper Eddie Dutchhover, Jerry Cornell and the program "Every 15 Minutes" by the Henderson Police Department.
