Savvy wine buys: Woodbridge by Mondavi ‘00 Cabernet Sauvignon

Here is a California Cab at a price that most people can easily afford. It may not be as inexpensive as "Two-buck Chuck," the Charles Shaw Cabernet that rocked the market at $2 a bottle, but it isn't a whole lot more. This is the second label from the famous Mondavi family, and while it may not be a top-drawer wine, it still has the classic plum and berry flavors that characterize California Cabernet, in addition to a rich, smooth finish, the result of extended skin contact with the juice. Available at Smith's Food & Drug, $6.99 ($4.99 with a Fresh Values Card).
