Chest pains hospitalize Virginia Tech coach

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer was in an Atlanta hospital today, two days after seeking medical attention for chest pains.

Beamer was vacationing with his family at his lakefront home near Atlanta when he started having chest pains Monday night, according to Virginia Tech director of football operations John Ballein. The coach saw a doctor and planned to fly home to be examined by his personal physician but was advised to go to a hospital instead.

A statement from the hospital said Beamer was admitted "for observation and further studies."

Castaways card off

A boxing card promoted by Richard Steele and headlining former world champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez that had been scheduled for Saturday at the Castaways was called off today. Citing insufficient promotion and alluding to a lack of ticket sales, the hotel pulled the plug on what would have been its first boxing card in several years. Gonzalez, a former world champion at 135 and 140 pounds, was to have fought Rene Herrera in an eight-round main event at 154 pounds.

Cardinal honored

Stanford's Ryan Garko was named the winner of the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation's top college catcher. He hit .402 with 18 home runs and tied a school record with 92 RBIs.

Dumais brothers win

Brothers Troy and Justin Dumais scored 324.06 points to win the men's synchronized 3-meter preliminaries at the National Diving Championships in Indianapolis. They beat Caesar Garcia and Matt Bricker of the Auburn Diving Club.
