Registration open for Start Camps

Registration is being accepted for Henderson Parks and Recreation's summer Start Camps, which provide sport-specific instruction for children 4 and 5 years old.

Camps include soccer July 7-11 and July 28-Aug. 1; basketball July 14-18 and Aug. 4-8; and baseball July 21-25 and Aug. 11-15. Camps are held 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.

Western group to play at pavilion

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting Grammy-winning Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel 8 p.m. Saturday at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway. In addition to appearing on "Austin City Limits" 10 times, the band has made movie cameos in the films "Roadie," starring Meatloaf and Art Carney, and "Wild Texas Wind" with Gary Busey.

Blood drives scheduled

These locations will host blood drives next week for United Blood Services, 6930 W. Charleston Blvd.:

Monday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunset Station, 1301 Sunset Road, in Henderson; 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Chili's, 9051 W. Charleston Blvd.; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Interior Specialists, 2060 Pama Lane.

Tuesday: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Suncoast.

Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Suncoast.

Thursday: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Suncoast.

July 5: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 Sunset Road.

Pediatric clinic moves

The University Medical Center's Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic has moved to a new location at 1700 Wheeler Peak St. The clinic located in the Enterprise Health Care and Dental Center will be under the direction of Dr. Sterling Tanner a pediatric endocrinologist and will treat children with diabetes and other endocrin disorders.

The UMC clinic will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For information on becoming a patient call 383-6299.

Shade Tree gets $32,000

The Shade Tree Shelter, Clark County's only 24-hour shelter for women and children in crisis received a $32,000 donation from the Shade Tree Women's Auxiliary.

The auxiliary held a "Ladies Night Out" fund-raiser in Green Valley hosted by John Fredericks of KVBC Channel 3. The event featured an auction of police officers and a silent auction of items donated from local businesses.

Shade Tree shelter was established in 1990 and provides 24-hour access to local women and children and assists them in becoming independent and self-sufficient. According to their website as many as 1,000 people access services from the shelter.
