Las Vegas Area Fishing Report: Fishing at night brings success locally

NEVADA DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

Typical early spring fishing is being found with anglers having the better success by fishing in the Overton Arm of Lake Mead.

Over the weekend there was fair to good action for striped bass and channel catfish by boaters who were fishing from Fish Island toward the Virgin River and north of Overton Beach Marina toward the Muddy River.

Some of the better success that has been coming from the Overton Arm has been taking place at night by boaters who have been fishing with anchovies. Both stripers and catfish are being caught at night.

One shore angler reported to the Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) that he had fair success over the weekend by fishing from shore at Devil's Cove in the upper end of Gregg Basin. Cut anchovies produced several stripers that ranged from 16 to 20 inches and six catfish that were 15 to 22 inches.

Trolling has not been catching stripers.

A few rainbow trout were caught following last week's plant at Willow Beach, even though the fish headed to deep water following the plant. Rainbow trout plants will take place at Willow Beach on May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Lake Mead Hatchery undergoes construction beginning in June.

Despite a recent rise in the water temperature to nearly 60 degrees, the largemouth bass fishing has yet to get under way. NDOW anticipates it will be several weeks before bass begin to bite.

The bass and crappie fishing have been slow, but the catch of both is expected to improve by the end of May.
