Major League snapshot

Before this season, he had hit. .295 in 10 years in the majors. Arguably his best seasons have been his past two, when he hit .304 and .311, respectively. If he doesn't lose a limb crashing into the Busch Stadium outfield wall, Edmonds could settle in around .300 and the Cardinals would be happy.

The last .400 hitter? Ted Williams, who hit .406 for Boston in 1941. In the NL, Bill Terry of the New York Giants hit .401 in 1930.

Kennedy, 23, is a 6-4, 235-pound lefty from the San Diego area and a product of a Rays scouting system that is aggressively combing the Southwest for young talent. He is scheduled to start again Wednesday night at home against Minnesota.
