Columnist Muriel Stevens: Jeweler opens new Vegas store

Longtime Las Vegas jeweler Jack Weinstein has opened a beautiful new Tower of Jewels store in the Rampart Commons center at West Charleston Boulevard and Rampart Avenue. The store had not yet opened when I peered through the windows a short while ago.

Tower of Jewels is surrounded by upscale shops -- Williams-Sonoma, The Gap, Talbot's and the recently opened Pottery Barn. And there's more to come.

Weinstein is a pioneer businessman who opened his first Las Vegas store in 1961. He was one of the first Las Vegas jewelers to employ a full-time diamond cutter. He recently created the Aurora-cut round diamond with 108 individual facets and exceptional brilliance. "At least 20 percent more," Jack said.

Tower of Jewels sends out a monthly newsletter to its VIP membership. VIP members get all sorts of free services, including complimentary jewelry cleaning, a complimentary standard watch battery (one per visit) and all kinds of extras. Membership is free. Stop by any Tower of Jewels to join.

"American Pop Icons" at Guggenheim Heritage Museum: "Art Through the Ages" closed Saturday at the Guggenheim Heritage Museum at The Venetian after an extended stay. The precious art works will be returned to the permanent collections of their respective institutions.

On May 15 "American Pop Icons" will open. This third exhibition at the Guggenheim includes 28 works of art that follow the beginnings of the pop art genre. So what makes a six pack of Coca-Cola bottles painted gold a work of art? The answer when I posed that question many years ago to then UNLV art department chief Peter Meyer was, "He thought of it first."

"American Pop Icons" will include works from Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg and others.

Locals may take advantage of a two-for-one admissions offer May 15 through May 31. Museum annual passes are now available to local residents for $45.

Guggenheim Heritage Museum is open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. For additional information, call 414-2440 or go online to guggenheim.org.
