Letter: Red Rock area tour is telling

I took the gypsum mine tour Sunday offered by its new owner, developer Jim Rhodes. I saw how well the land can be reclaimed to a "more natural setting." The original owners had already started the process and have done a great job. I don't want to see gated communities (really a town) on the hill with only a small portion of the land to be used by the county.

It probably won't be cost effective for Mr. Rhodes to develop if there are no commercial sites allowed, so we need to keep the original zoning. Yes, money talks and we need to fight his "juice."

Red Rock Canyon was a big draw in our moving to Las Vegas. And yes, the land in question is part of the canyon. A legislative committee meets Saturday at the Sawyer State Office Building to consider a bill that would freeze the mine's low-density zoning. I would love to see the prominent people of our community attend and speak out on this subject. Let's show Mr. Rhodes that it isn't just the "crazy activists" who are opposed to his plans, as the company is saying. Thanks for the tour, Mr. Rhodes!
