Police review shooting case after victim dies

Prosecutors and Metro Police are reviewing a nearly 2-year-old shooting case after the comatose victim passed away earlier this week.

Kizzy Edwards was shot 19 months ago on Bonanza Road near Martin Luther King Boulevard. Auntrell Clark is serving a sentence in the Nevada State Prison in the shooting after pleading guilty to battery with the use of a deadly weapon, Chief Deputy District Attorney Frank Coumou said.

"We had to prosecute the case at the time and the only information we were getting from the family (of the victim) is that Edwards would survive," Coumou said. "Now we need to wait to see exactly what the diagnosis is on the cause of death."

Coumou said that if it turns out that Edwards died from the gunshot wound, murder charges could be brought against Clark.

"There is case law in this state that would support filing those charges," Coumou said. "It wouldn't be double jeopardy because he (Clark) hasn't faced a murder charge before."

In 1999 a state law that prohibited murder prosecutions in cases where the victim died more than a year and a day after being injured was repealed.
