Longtime UNLV coach Shan McDonald fired

UNLV softball head coach Shan McDonald's contract will not be renewed when it expires on June 30, Athletic Director John Robinson announced Monday.

McDonald spent 17 years as the Rebels' head coach, arriving in Las Vegas in 1987. She guided UNLV to a 511-469-2 record and seven postseason appearances.

"Shan has been a valuable member of the UNLV coaching staff for many years and has had a lot of success in her career," Robinson said. "But the program has not shown the progress over the last few years that we had hoped for, and we felt like it was time to move in another direction."

The Rebels posted a 21-39 record in 2003 and finished the year in sixth place in the Mountain West Conference with a 4-14 mark. Their season ended Saturday with a 7-1 loss to Colorado State at the MWC tournament.
