Giambi hit his eighth homer of the season Friday in a defeat in Oakland, but he sat out Saturday and Sunday because of a lingering staph infection near his left eye. He has tried various medications, to no avail ... yet. The AL will know when he's cured.

The Reds are rounding into form, but that chemistry will be tweaked as center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., starting pitcher Jimmy Haynes and versatile Russell Branyan return from the disabled list within the next two weeks. To make room, three will be sent packing.

Cincinnati fears losing Wily Mo Pena, 21, for good. A 6-foot-3, 215-pound outfielder considered by some experts to be the organization's most gifted athlete, Pena is out of options and the Reds risk losing him.

Now 28 and property of Tampa Bay, he threw 13 pitches -- walking the only two batters he faced -- in his Rays debut Friday night.

And keep the radio off. Oakland and Seattle, knotted at 23-14 atop the AL West, visit Detroit, in that order, for three-game sets.
