Bicyclist hit, left with broken legs

A hit and run vehicle plowed into a man riding a bicycle home from work early Wednesday, breaking both the man's legs and leaving him immobile on the side of the road for at least two hours, Henderson Police said.

Police are looking for the vehicle, which may have a damaged right front bumper or fender. The vehicle also sustained a broken headlight and possible hood damage. No further description was available.

David Bryant, 53, was making the mile and a half trip home from his workplace, Berry Plastics at 800 E. Horizon Drive, on his bike between midnight and 1 a.m. Wednesday.

As he headed south on the shoulder of Boulder Highway, a vehicle drifted into the shoulder of the road and struck Bryant from behind, police said. He was thrown off his bike and tumbled into the desert.

Bryant tried to walk after he was hit, police said, but he was only able to make it about 1,000 feet before lying down on the shoulder of the road. He used a flashlight he had in his backpack to signal to passing motorists, and about 3 a.m., someone called police.

Bryant was taken to St. Rose Dominican Hospital where he was listed in fair condition with two broken legs.

Reached by phone while being treated in the emergency room, Bryant said: "I'm in an enormous amount of pain."

Anyone with information is asked to call Henderson Police or 565-8933 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
