Vasser looks good for race

SPECIAL TO LAS VEGAS SUN

INDIANAPOLIS -- Veteran driver Jimmy Vasser of Las Vegas turned in the fastest practice lap Wednesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway among drivers yet to qualify for the 87th Indianapolis 500.

Vasser toured the Speedway at 225.956 miles per hour in the Argent Rahal/Letterman Racing Dallara/Honda, his first official practice laps on the track since last year.

"The car was solid," Vasser said after 55 laps of practice. "I was flat and ran about 226 on our own. I was running that speed in just three or four laps, and there's a lot more in there for speed."

Vasser said there would be a different engine in the car when he qualifies. Vasser, 37, is seeking his eighth 500 start. His best finish was fourth in 1994 and 2001.
