Editorial: Rush to judgment would be grievous

WEEKEND EDITION: May 18, 2003

Last week, as part of a political corruption probe, the FBI raided properties owned by Jack Galardi and his son Michael, including three strip clubs, two in Las Vegas and one in San Diego. The agents were looking for any information that illegal payments may have been made to local politicians, including Las Vegas Councilman Michael McDonald, County Commissioner Mary Kincaid-Chauncey and former County Commissioners Dario Herrera and Erin Kenny.

Usually, elected officials aren't held in high regard by the public, so even the acknowledgement of a criminal investigation can ruin a political career. Political corruption should be aggressively rooted out, but Las Vegans should keep in mind that the FBI has told us very little about the probe. There are times when law enforcement agencies mount an investigation but nothing happens because not enough evidence has been found to sustain a charge. We look forward to the results of the investigation -- minus a rush to judgment.
