Las Vegas Area Fishing Report: Hemenway Harbor has striper success stories

For May 23, 2003

NEVADA DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

Boaters have been enjoying fair action in the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead for stripers that weigh 1-3 pounds.

Some of the better success has been coming from the Hemenway Harbor area. Shore fishing continues to be slow.

Fishing continues to be good in the Overton Arm with boaters and shore anglers catching largemouth and striped bass and channel catfish. Coves north of Overton Beach Marina and those around Bighorn Island near Echo Bay have been producing largemouth bass with the fish being taken from shallow water.

Stripers are being taken around Fish Island and from Overton Beach to the Muddy River. Channel catfish are being caught in the same areas with anchovies being used for bait.

A scheduled 6 a.m. power outage at the Lake Mead Hatchery forced NDOW workers to load fish onto the truck early. The next trout plant at Willow Beach was scheduled for Thursday.

Stripers that weighed 23 and 18 pounds were caught May 15 by boaters near Willow Beach. Stripers weighing 1-2 pounds continue to be caught above Cottonwood Cove.

Largemouth bass fishing continues to be slow, but Maes expects the bass to "turn on" soon as water temperatures warm.Reservoir surface temps are 65 degrees.
