Two men shot dead in NLV

Two men were shot and killed within a mile of each other Thursday in North Las Vegas, but it's not clear if the slayings are related, police said.

Franklin Velasquez, 28, was found dead with a gunshot wound in his chest in a vehicle near Interstate 15 and Cheyenne Avenue about 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

Police said it appeared someone fired into Velasquez's vehicle as he turned into his driveway in the 2500 block of Bulloch Street. Police don't have a description of a suspect and they aren't certain why Velasquez was killed.

Another homicide happened shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of Bassler Street, near Cheyenne Avenue and Civic Center Drive. Officers found a man, believed to be between the ages of 25 and 30, dead on the sidewalk in front of a house. He had been shot in the head, police said.

The Clark County coroner's office did not release the name of the victim this morning, pending the notification of his family. Police are interviewing witnesses and trying to determine a motive.

Anyone with information on either of these homicides is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or North Las Vegas Police at 633-1773.

Goodman asked to help McDonald

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said he's been asked to record a phone message for Councilman Michael McDonald to help the incumbent in his race against Janet Moncrief.

Election Day is Tuesday.

Goodman said Thursday he still hadn't seen a script.

"It depends on what the script says," Goodman said when asked if he will cut the message.

Goodman has sent out a flier endorsing the library bond issue, which asks voters to approve a $50.6 million bond to add four new branches to the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. The tax, to be spread over 30 years, would add an average of $8.82 per year for each $100,000 of property.

Woman injured in mobile home fire

Henderson Fire Department crews are investigating the cause of a mobile home fire that caused $50,000 in damages.

About 2:40 a.m. on Thursday Henderson Fire Department crews responded to a fire at 278 Navajo Drive near Lake Mead Parkway and Center Street, where a mobile home was in flames, Battalion Chief Doug Koopman said.

It took 20 minutes to put the fire out, he said.

The homeowner and a female resident escaped from the flames. The woman suffered first- and second-degree burns on her hands and face and was taken to University Medical Center, Koopman said. The owner of the mobile home was not injured.
