Palo Verde honored for Red Horse Project

The Palo Verde High School National Honors Society chapter was recently given an Outstanding Service Project award by the National Honor Society for its work on Project Red Horse.

After being approached by the commanders at Nellis Air Force Base to participate in Project Red Horse in 2003, members of the NHS at Palo Verde High School have pulled together this winter to help other schools and students abroad to join in.

Project Red Horse is a service that has for years been building elementary schools worldwide. The next three schools were slated for Bolivia, the first schools to be built in Latin America by the U.S. military.

The Palo Verde chapter was asked to assist the project by collecting supplies, including items such as paper, pencils, notebooks, and other school supplies. Hygiene items and cleaning supplies were also collected by the group.

Although the collection was intended to last for three months, the chapter continued through the end of May due to the overwhelming response they got from the city.

The NHS chapter also made 200 fleece blankets to send with their donations.

The Outstanding Service Project awards were created in 1994 to recognize the NHS/NJHS chapters that make significant community service contributions locally.

Applications are judged based on the project's originality and magnitude.
