Panel to begin task of finding new judge

CARSON CITY -- The state Judicial Selection Commission on Dec. 27 is to start interviewing the 17 lawyers who applied to succeed District Judge Ron Parraguirre, who was elected to the Nevada Supreme Court.

After the interviews in Las Vegas, the commission will select three nominees, and Gov. Kenny Guinn will make the final selection. The winner will serve until the next general election in 2006.

The deadline for applications was Friday.

One of the applicants is Gerald J. Gardner, 40, chief of the criminal division in the state attorney general's office. He supervised the investigation into allegations of misconduct by Controller Kathy Augustine, which led to her impeachment trial.

Leeds, 55, of Las Vegas, Clark County hearing master; Family Court Judge Robert W. Lueck, 56;Troy E. Peyton, 44, of Las Vegas, private practice.; Michael P. Villani, 47, of Las Vegas, private practice; Moapa Valley Township Justice of the Peace D. Lanny Waite, 51, of Las Vegas; Timothy C. Williams, 49, of Las Vegas, private practice; Paul E.
