School celebrates 50

Golden from start to finish, the 50th anniversary to celebrate the progress of Bishop Gorman High School was an event of note for all attending the Wednesday dinner.

Victoria and Frank Fertitta Jr., with their children and spouses, Jill and Frank Fertitta III, Teresa and Lorenzo Feritta and Delise and Blake Sartini, served as honorary chairpersons for the gathering of 600 supporters at Texas Station.

Combined in the evening's program was recognition of those previously honored as BGHS Knights of the Royal Order of the Gael, an award given over the past 22 years to those individuals and families who have given exemplary service.

During the reception many multigenerational family groups attended, including the families of Ted and Maria Quirk, Dr. Jerry and Judy Sylvain, Joan and Larry Tuntland, Dr. Gerald and Lucia Higgins, John and Rene O'Reilly, Dick and Nancy Etter, J.A. Tiberti, Sheriff Bill and Sandy Young, Maryanna and Jerry Herbst, former Gov. Bob and Sandy Miller and dozens more who well illustrated the sense of continuity among the Gorman community.

On display was a model of the new BGHS building, later referred to in detail by Blake Sartini, chairman of the capital campaign for the 35-acre campus to be sited at Interstate 215 and Hualapai Way in Summerlin.

Additionally, the dinner program included a brief history of the school by emcee John Mowbray and speeches by graduating seniors whose attendance was made possible by the BGHS Tuition Assistance Foundation. Proceeds from the dinner will contribute to future scholarships, with the stated intention to surpass the $300,000 in tuition assistance used in this current school year.

Attending supporters included Dr. Charles and Barbara Ruggeroli, Mark and Bonnie Dreschler, Judge Bill Jansen, Thomas and Buffie Kerestesi, the Rev. Richard Rinn, Cliff and Carol Ann Klinkhammer, Rhonda Cashman Evans and Art and Mary Lou Thomas.

Named for Thomas Gorman, first Bishop of the Diocese of Reno, which covered all of Nevada at the time, the school opened Sept. 7, 1954, on land donated by Romy Hammes and continues today as Southern Nevada's only Roman Catholic high school.
