Biaggi to head conservation office

A longtime state environmental regulator has been named director of the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Gov. Kenny Guinn today announced the appointment of Allen Biaggi to the $109,582 a year job to succeed Michael Turnipseed, who resigned. Biaggi has been acting director since July 9.

Biaggi, 46, joined the state Division of Environmental Protection in 1979 as a college intern. He was appointed chief of the Bureau of Corrective Actions in the division in 1993 and in 1996 was named deputy administrator of the environmental protection. In 1998 he was selected for the top job in the division.

The department includes such programs as forestry, environmental protection, preservation of wild horses, the lands division, parks and the water resources division that rules on applications for water.
