MacCachren leads locals at Las Vegas Primm 300

While Rob MacCachren and the other Southern Nevada desert racers had hoped for better, the 20 local entries did manage a much higher finishing rate than the rest of the field in Saturday's ninth annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300.

Honolulu's Alan Pflueger used his rainy-weather experience to good advantage, capturing the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck division in Primm. In winning his second consecutive race in the 2004 SCORE Desert Series in his No. 28 Pflueger Racing Chevy Silverado, Pflueger overcame rain, mud and a record field of 184 starters to win the soggy 325.6-mile race in a time of 5 hours, 23 minutes and 28 seconds, averaging a solid 60.40 miles per hour.

With their home-desert knowledge assisting them, nine of the 20 locals completed the race with MacCachren on top in one class and second in another.

Round 4 of the five-race 2004 SCORE Desert Series featured racers from 13 states and Mexico racing in conditions that ranged from cool to hot and humid as well as from sunny to cloudy and rainy.

Some of the sport's top drivers are from Southern Nevada and several of them did not finish the rugged, rain-drenched race. Among that unfortunate group were SCORE Trophy Truck stars Ed and Tim Herbst (engine failure), Brian Collins (transfer case) and B.J. Baldwin (multiple mechanical problems).

MacCachren and fellow Las Vegan Danny Anderson won for the third time in four races this year, defeating a race-high field of 37 starters in Class 1-2/1600 in a Fraley-VW. Despite losing an alternator early on the third lap, the team moved closer in the season point standings. The pair is second to the team of Brian Jeffrey and Adam Pfankuch.
