Cheyenne grad among players arrested

Two Southern Utah University football players, including one from Las Vegas, and one former player have been arrested after a person was severely beaten in a fight at a weekend party.

Players LaVar M. Porter, 20, of Las Vegas, and LaRue Martin Joseph Burley, 21, of Cedar City, and former player Isiah Quinton Mack, 23, of Cedar City, were arrested Tuesday for investigation of assault.

SUU sports information director Neil Gardner said no action will be taken by the school pending the outcome of the case.

Porter, who played in seven games for the Thunderbirds last season and graduated from Cheyenne High, entered the team's fall camp as the projected starter at middle linebacker.

Gaudio awaits Agassi

Andre Agassi had little trouble with error-prone Nicolas Kiefer, routing the German 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the Montreal Masters.

The 35-year-old Agassi, seeded No. 4, will face sixth-seeded Gaston Gaudio of Argentina today.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals was French Open champion Rafael Nadal, who overpowered Sebastien Grosjean 6-4, 6-4. Nadal will face eighth-seeded Mariano Puerta in the quarterfinals. Puerta beat Xavier Malisse 6-2, 6-4.

Lindros signs with Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed unrestricted free agent Eric Lindros to a one-year contract.

Lindros, 32, played 39 games for the New York Rangers in 2003-2004 collecting 10 goals and 22 assists with 60 penalty minutes.

Memmel outshines Liukin in prelims

Now that she's healthy again, Chellsie Memmel's looking more like the girl who hauled in all that gold in 2003.

The double gold medalist at the 2003 world championships outperformed pre-meet favorite Nastia Liukin, finishing first in preliminaries at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships.

Dumais brothers take home gold

Justin and Troy Dumais won the 3-meter synchro gold medal at the U.S. National Diving Championships.

The brothers, who won the bronze medal at last month's world championships and were sixth at the Athens Olympics, finished with 337.710 points.

Teen Busch driver will make jump up

Reed Sorenson, a hotshot 19-year-old Busch Series driver, will run a full Nextel Cup schedule next season in a fourth team for Chip Ganassi Racing, two people within the team told The Associated Press.

A formal announcement was scheduled for Friday at Watkins Glen International, and the two sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed that Sorenson would be introduced as the driver of the No. 41 Dodge. They did not want to be identified before Sorenson's official introduction.

Negro League star dies at age 103

Ted Radcliffe, one of the last surviving Negro leagues stars, whose prowess on the pitching mound and behind the plate inspired Damon Runyon to nickname him Double Duty, died Thursday in Chicago at age 103.

The cause was complications of cancer, said the Chicago White Sox, who invited Radcliffe to throw out ceremonial first balls in recent seasons.
